Moving to Better Chronic Care in Medicare: NCCC Proposals for Change

June 10, 2003
NCCC Introduces Complex Care Management Fee Proposal
Medicare beneficiaries with multiple, complex chronic conditions account for the majority of program spending. In fact, people with five or more conditions accounted for 20 percent of the Medicare population in 1999 and two-thirds of program spending. Beneficiaries with five or more conditions see an average of 14 different doctors in a year, have almost 40 physician visits and fill almost 50 prescriptions in a year.

Dually Eligible Technical Assistance Reports

The NCCC has completed work on five technical assistance reports that were prepared at the request of Mark Meiners, director of the Medicare/Medicaid Integration Program. The five reports focus on topics pertinent to creating better systems of care for people who are dually eligible for Medicare and Medicaid. The reports draw upon articles and references in the healthcare literature as well as materials prepared by the NCCC for its membership and for the State of Minnesota in support of the Minnesota Senior Health Options demonstration.
