Congressional Staff Briefing
Who Will Care for the Chronically Ill?
On Monday, February 26, 2001, Rich Bringewatt was a featured speaker at a healthcare briefing on
Capitol Hill. "Who Will Care for the Chronically Ill?" was sponsored by the Alliance for Health
Reform. Senator Jay Rockefeller, co-chair of the Alliance, provided opening remarks; Dr. Gerard
Anderson of Johns Hopkins presented data from a new Harris poll on public attitudes about chronic
illness, and Rich made the case for health systems reform. Rich and Dr. Anderson were joined by
Dr. Robert Friedland, director, National Academy on an Aging Society, on a panel that responded
to questions from congressional staff and press. Over 200 congressional staff, press, and policy
leadership attended this two-hour luncheon briefing. The Alliance for Health Reform is the
principle resource used by Congress to educate congressional staff on health policy issues.
The Alliance holds special briefings on Medicare issues about a dozen times a year. The
Alliance is co-chaired by Senator Rockefeller (D) and Senator Frist (R).
