NCCC Member Testifies at HHS Hearing
Dr. Alan Lazaroff, a geriatrician at NCCC member, Centura Health,
testified before the Secretary's Advisory Committee on Regulatory Reform on May 16.
This regional hearing, held in Denver, was part of the Department of Health
and Human Services' Regulatory Reform Initiative. Dr. Lazaroff spoke about
the challenges he faces as he treats a frail patient population with
multiple chronic conditions within the current Medicare structure. A family
member of two of Dr. Lazaroff's patients also testified, providing the
perspective of a family caregiver caring for two frail parents.

HHS was an active participant at the recent NCCC Working Session
focused on regulatory reform. In his keynote address, Bobby Jindal, the
assistant secretary for planning and evaluation, outlined HHS regulatory
reform plans. Christy Schmidt, the executive coordinator of the Regulatory
Reform Initiative also spoke and provided leadership.
The Secretary's Advisory Committee on Regulatory Reform is a part of the HHS
initiative to reduce regulatory burdens in health care and respond faster to
the concerns of health care providers, state and local governments, and
individual Americans affected by HHS rules. Regional hearings, like the one
in Denver, are a primary means of identifying targets for change. NCCC President and CEO,
Richard Bringewatt, will be
testifying at the fifth and final regional meeting, which will be held in
Minneapolis in June. The focus of his testimony will be issues of the dually
eligible for Medicare and Medicaid.
