Challenges for the 21st Century: Chronic and Disabling Conditions
New Data Profile on Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Is Available
from the Center on an Aging Society
The Center on an Aging Society has just released the sixth in a series
of Data Profiles on chronic and disabling conditions. Chronic
Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: A chronic condition that limits
activities, examines the extent to which the condition affects daily
life, including participation in the work force and activities at home.
Some 25 percent of people with COPD, but only 7 percent of people
without the condition, report that it is somewhat or very difficult or
not possible to participate in social activities. The profile also
reports that health service use and health care expenditure are high for
people who have COPD.
